Just after three in the morning on Boxing Day 1980, Staff Sergeant James Penniston walked into the Rendlesham Forest with two airmen behind him. They were armed only with flashlights. The trees were wet from earlier rain.
What Penniston later described approaching had a triangular base, a smooth metallic skin, and a series of glyph-like markings he claims to have written down on the back of an investigation slip.
